Dean Joachim Koops presented his latest book, ‘The Oxford Handbook to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations,’ at the the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC), in honour of International United Nations Peacekeepers Day.
The event, which included a debate and a Q&A session, was attended by academics, students, journalists, as well as UN and EU professionals. This diverse audience was given the chance to interact with the three panelists: Joachim Koops, Clara Ganslandt, Head of Division for the EU Common Defense & Security Policy Partnerships and Agreements at the EEAS, and Rory Keane, Head of Office of the UN Liaison Office for Peace and Security. Dr. Keane started the session by reading a letter from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in which he praised the work of UN peacekeepers while deploring the recent deaths of 5 peacekeepers in Mali and condemning the trend of unlawful conduct by some deployed troops. These topics, as well as the efficacy of peacekeeping operations and the potential need for more EU rather than UN actions, were further discussed during the debate and Q&A session with the audience.
