On Wednesday 19th October, Vesalius College warmly welcomed His Excellency, Anthony L. Gardner, US Ambassador to the EU, and Dr. Fernando Andresen Guimarães, the European External Action Service (EEAS), Adjunct Professor & Advisory Board Member on European and Global Diplomacy at Vesalius College.
H.E. Ambassador Gardner began the lecture by highlighting the importance of a strong and united Europe in the face of current crises. He then proceeded to discuss the partnership between the US and EU and contextualising it within current developments in the fields of trade and investment, data privacy, the digital single market, energy security, climate change, development aid and humanitarian assistance.
Dr. Guimarães discussed the transatlantic cooperation in addressing the crisis in Ukraine. The actions of the Russian Federation have shaken the foundations of the European security order and have derailed the effort to build a strong partnership. The EU has adopted the five principles guiding its relationship with Russia, including the need to implement the Minsk agreement. Despite the challenges, the EU is committed to promote people-to-people contacts, provide support to civil society and strengthen the education exchanges.
During the Q&A session, our enthusiastic audience asked a series of engaging, and thought-provoking questions, which was continued following the conclusion of the lecture during the informal reception.
