Prof Dr William L. Chew III presented “The Easel and the Eagle: Rembrandt Peale Views Napoleonic France

On July 6, 2011, Prof Dr William L. Chew III presented “The Easel and the Eagle: Rembrandt Peale Views Napoleonic France,” at the academic congress “Napoleonic Europe at Its Peak,” the Ninth International Napoleonic Conference of the International Napoleonic Society. The conference was held in Den Helder, The Netherlands and co-sponsored by the Dutch Royal Naval Academy and the City of Den Helder. Professor Chew’s paper focused on Peale’s reception of Napoleonic domestic and foreign policies and his character as a statesman. He viewed these within the context of the French Revolution, and that of the American revolutionary experience – embedded in the ideology of American exceptionalism.
