On Thursday 29 October, the European Peace & Security Studies (EPSS) lecture series Fall 2015 warmly welcomed Mr. Riccardo Fabiani, Senior analyst at Eurasia Group to give a lecture on ‘North Africa 5 Years after the Arab Spring”.
Mr. Fabiani began his lecture by providing a detailed overview of the Maghreb States looking at their political, economic and social situations prior to the Arab spring, just after, and the state of play today. After a very in-depth and informed comparative analysis of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, he highlighted how many observers, particularly in the West, ignored the significant differences existing between these countries. These differences also characterised the various patterns of development that Maghrebi countries experienced after the eruption of the Arab Spring. At the end of his talk, Mr. Fabiani gave some insights on possible future developments in North Africa and the wider Mediterranean region.
The lecture was followed by a Q&A session and a light reception.
