Our heartfelt congratulations to the VeCo’s Honours Class on their fantastic achievements in Washington DC!
This competition ‘Peer 2 Peer’ was organized by the US State Department to develop a campaign on challenging extremism. VeCo students’ project ‘Newsworthy,’ led by Prof. Serge Stroobants, was selected as one of three finalists and students traveled to DC for their final presentation which took place on Monday, June 25. They finished second out of 45 universities world-wide and will receive funding from the US State Department for developing their project further!
It is an additional pleasure that a VeCo Alumnus Andrej Misech (Class of 2014) also participated in this competition representing the College of Europe (the only other Belgian university selected for the competition) and his team reached the finals in the Facebook strand of the competition.
Here is a comment from Nadia Tjahja, one of the Newsworthy members:
‘Congratulations Team Newsworthy for second place in the Challenging Extremism competition! It was close but we are happy about our achievements. With our source verified articles and training on source verification on newsworthy.eu we have reached over a million people globally of which 250,000 engaged with us actively on social media to #ChallengeExtremism and the work does not stop here. We received 3000 dollars to enhance and develop our project and may receive further funding! Facebook and other universities have expressed an interest to continue a working collaboration so the future is bright. A big thank you to everyone who supported us!’
