Study Abroad (for Outbound Vesalius Students Only)

Vesalius students may study abroad either at an institution with which the College has an agreement (see below) or at an approved college or university of their choice.  Courses taken abroad may count towards Core Curriculum requirements (including free electives), towards major requirements or towards major electives.  Interested students must consult with the Registrar and with their Academic Advisor during the preparatory stage.  If applying to a partner institution, they must also consult with the Study Abroad Coordinator, who will assist in making the necessary arrangements.

Experiences from students who studied abroad

I was involved in a programme called the home visit program where I was offered to visit a Japanese family in their home and to spend a day with them.  This opportunity opened my eyes to the Japanese family interaction, the architectural style of their house and Japanese customs. The Japanese family and students who participated in these programs were always willing to accompany me on cultural and shopping trips. They were always hospitable and eager to help.

I took several interesting courses that I otherwise wouldn't have a chance to take, because they are not offered at Vesalius and I'm really glad I did it. Also, I got to experience several different cultures: the Spanish culture, and the one of the SLU Madrid campus. Plus, I got to see a multitude of beautiful places, enjoyed many sunny days, and learned how to dance the salsa!

I built friendships that may last a lifetime, and now actually miss the dorm atmosphere and lifestyle - not to mention the impeccable conditions. The Kansai Gaidai campus is also recently renovated, very modern and a pleasure to stroll through after class.

Academically speaking, I was happy to see that most courses were actually related significantly to Japan or Asia in general, which complemented nicely the Western oriented classes I had been taking at Vesalius as an International Affairs student.

The Bentley University campus is exactly like you see in movies; it is very big, modern and amazing in every way. I was astonished the first day I arrived on campus by how helpful and kind everyone was and by how well the program was organized.

As part of my tour of Korea during the last week of March, 2009, I had the opportunity to visit all four of our Korean partner universities.  This was my first trip to Korea, or even to Asia and I was quite simply enchanted by the warmth and hospitality with which I was greeted at every turn.  Our Korean colleagues and their students organized my visit with precision and the utmost efficiency and made sure that my every need was met, in addition to ensuring that I had the opportunity to experience traditional foods and customs typical of their regions.  I also had the opportunity to tour the campuses of our partner schools, all of which were extremely impressive with respect to the facilities and services available to students and academic faculties.

I left for Japan in search of Oriental philosophy, the "new", the "exotic", and instead discovered a place entirely different from any expectations, wonderful in all ways, beyond any sushi or Buddha clichés. Despite the familiar atmosphere of an American-style university and dorm, I got to know the Japanese people, and began to understand the mentality and tradition of a nation so different from my own. All of the classes I attended had an Asian "twist" as well that broadened my knowledge about world history and politics. The four months passed before I knew it.
