Vesalus College IT Information

Vesalius College students have access to both computer rooms located in the Vesalius College Lecture Building and the computer rooms in E-building on the main VUB Campus, across the street from the Vesalius College Lecture Building.

To log on to the computers in these rooms, students need to activate their VUB Computer Account. Computer systems include PC (Windows XP Professional) and Mac.

Activation Instructions

Access the internet (from your computer at home or from a computer in the computer room at Vesalius College)

4.   Fill out your student ID number next to enrolment number

5.   Pin-code: Type in your pin-code (see student card)

6.   Be sure to fill out the rest of the requested data: family name, first name, date of birth. Remember: Date of birth in Europe follows the day/month/year format

7.   When all of the above is complete, click the ‘continue’ button.

In order to use any of the computer room facilities at Vesalius College, you have to activate another account, which is tied to the VUB e-mail account. This account will not work without activating your VUB e-mail account first.

  • Go to this page: http://wendy.vub.ac.be/accounts/ using any internet-connected computer and complete the information at the bottom of the page.
  • The username (Net-ID) that you will have to fill in, is the short version of your email account. This is v+your student-ID number (eg. v0109059)
  • The password is the same as for your VUB e-mail account.
  • Your account will be active after about 5 minutes.

If, for any reason, you change your VUB e-mail password, please be aware that the password for the computer room at Vesalius College does not change automatically with it. Please see Mr. Chris Janssens in office 042 to have your password at the Vesalius College computer room reset.

Using the computer rooms

The log-in page will appear automatically when you start up your browser after you connect to the wireless network ‘VeCo-Airlines/Vesa-Airlines’.

  • Your e-mail address can be different from your VUB e-mail address.
  • Only Belgian phone numbers are allowed.

4.    Choose a password. No special requirements.
5.    If successful, you will be presented with the login-screen. Fill out your profile name and chosen password.
Each subsequent time, you will have to log on to the network with your chosen profile name and password when accessing the ‘Urbizone’ network.

Printing

Print credit costs €0.03 per page. Each time you print, you receive an e-mail in your VUB e-mail account informing you ho much print credit you have left. If your print credit is running low, please see Mr. Chris Janssens, office 042, to acquire more print credit.

Your print credit can also be used in the computer rooms in E-building. Printing in other VUB-computer rooms is not possible with your VeCo-print credit.

Pointcarré

Once your account is activated, go to  http://pointcarre.vub.ac.be

Select English as your language if it is not selected automatically by choosing it from the drop-down menu on the right-hand side.

Then, complete your VUB log-in in the username-box (v+your student ID, for example v0109059) and the password you use to check your VUB e-mail.

If you have completed this information correctly, you will be re-directed to your personal Pointcarré-homepage.

First thing to do is to update your profile.
Careful: You can only do this once, so make sure you spell your name correctly!

From the top menu of the website, select 'My Profile' and enter your last name and first name. This will allow professors to see who registered for the course.

Your course list will, however, still be empty. You must subscribe to your courses manually

Click on ‘Course Management’ from the menu on the right-hand side. You will see the first ‘Course Management’ page. From the options listed there, choose ‘Subscribe to courses’. A page will come up listing course categories.

From this list, select ‘Vesalius College’.

From the subcategories listed on the page you see next, browse to your courses and click on ‘subscribe’ to add them to your course list. Alternatively you can type in the course code in the search-box at the bottom of the page to find your courses. Once all your courses have been added, return to ‘my course list’ by clicking on that option in the top-menu. You will see the course(s) listed there.

To access the materials that the professor has made available online, simply click on the course in your course list and go to the appropriate section of that course. (agenda, documents, assignments, links etc.).

Complete instructions on how to use Pointcarré are available here

Regulations

The computer rooms of Vesalius College are open every day from 9:00 till 17:00. During the semester, volunteers will keep this room open after 17:00. A schedule will be posted on the door of the computer room indicating opening hours and names of supervisors during the second week of the semester. The supervisors have to help you with following issues:

  • help using software applications
  • help activating your account
  • printing (paper supply)

In all computer rooms (VeCo as well as VUB) the following regulations are in place:

  • no smoking, eating, drinking
  • no socializing (the computer rooms are working areas so should be quiet – it does not mean you cannot talk but you should keep your voice down so you do not disturb fellow students)
  • No music or videos

In any computer room people from the administration and/or the supervisors can request you to show your student card. Do not take this as an offense but cooperate. As the campus and the VeCo building are very open anyone can walk in and use the computers. The only way to know who is a student and who is not is by requesting the persons to show their student card.

If regulations are not respected (especially the eating, drinking and smoking), the administration/supervisors can decide to close the computer room. If a student is caught violating the rules, the account of this student may be blocked.
