ART 109E Art in Belgium
In-depth study of a chosen period of Belgian art (Gothic or Baroque or Art Nouveau) in its diverse forms: painting, architecture, sculpture.
BUS 352E Intellectual Property rights
The course introduces students to the origins, history and basic concepts of intellectual property rights (IPR's), and provides them with the skills to apply this theoretical knowledge to practical cases. Students acquire a basic understanding of the different forms of IPR's, how they originate or are created, how they are used in practice and how they interact. Lectures, debates and practical exercises are combined, and students are trained through real IPR cases, so as to compare the end result of the students' insights with the outcome of the real case.

CMM 101E Introduction to Human Communication
Allows future communication practitioners to study and comprehend the preliminaries to language as well as to verbal and non-verbal communication. Strong focus on public communication and, in particular, on the preparation and organization of public speeches. Studies the nature, components and purposes of human communication. Familiarizes students with the basic theoretical and practical models of various communication courses offered.
CMM 242E Corporate Communication & Public Relations
Examines the specificity and characteristics of the various mechanisms that have arisen under the cover of corporate communications. Particular attention is paid to strategy development and evaluation in corporate communications, with students researching and assessing the quality and nature of the communication flow within an organization or company of their choice. Public relations are discussed by evaluating numerous cases (from corporations to media empires) that call for a number of possible PR strategic responses. Includes practicals.

CMM 352E International Reporting in Brussels
Enhances writing, reporting and analytical skills so that students can produce articles on the European Union, NATO and other intergovernmental and international non-governmental organisations based in Brussels, the city with the highest number of accredited international journalists worldwide. Requires attendance at news conferences and briefings at these organisations’ headquarters.
Pre-requisite: CMM 103E; POL 231E recommended
ECN 381/E European Monetary Institutions: Policy & Practice
Essentially a money and banking course with a focus on eurozone and EU central banking. Topics to be covered will include money demand and its determinant variables, the operations of central banking, and the role of the single currency, and implications for monetary policy and currency associated with eurozone entry.
Pre-requisite: ECN101E; COR112E
INT 381E Internship
Working in a sponsoring firm or organisation, students undertake a 135-150 hour project on a theme or topic related to their major. Requires students to work on-site at least 22.5 hours per week, keep a daily activity log and write a project report.
Pre-requisites: For 3-year students, in their fourth semester or beyond, good academic standing and approval by their Advisor. For 4-year students, Junior or Senior standing, good academic standing and approval by their Advisor.
POL 241E European Identity, Euro-Scepticism and the Legitimacy Problem of the EU
This course explores the various dimensions of the legitimacy and identity crisis of the European Union. It analyses the causes for popular rejection of the Constitution and scepticism to the European Union. It studies and compares the role and the ideologies of Euro-sceptic political parties. It reflects upon the problems of defining a European identity, with particular emphasis on the problematic position within Europe of minorities of non-European origin.
POL 334E The European Union in the World
Explores the changing role of the European Union (EU) on the global stage. Although many of the individual countries of Europe have played leading roles in world affairs, the two World Wars effectively diminished the influence of Europe's countries as individual actors. This course will examine the evolution of the EU’s global influence through an analysis of several key areas of influence, including enlargement, trade and economic policy and the development of defence policy.
STA 101E Introduction to Statistics
The course will include descriptive statistics; review of probability including joint, marginal, and conditional probabilities; random variables and probability distributions, random samples and sampling distributions; point and interval estimation; testing statistical hypotheses; correlation and simple linear regression.
Intensive Study Courses
Vesalius College is for the first time offering intensive sutdy courses for professionals looking to learn new skills or further develop existing ones. These courses are also designed for personal enrichment. They are generally non-credit courses, though they can be taken for credit with additional course work required. There are no pre-requisites for these courses. Contact the Admissions Department for more details.
ART 281E Art and Architecture of Belgium (16 July- 21 July)
This course will study the development of art and architecture in Belgium from the earliest oil paintings of the fifteenth century to the Surrealism of Magritte and Delvaux. To understand these pictures in their historical context, students will read texts on the history of art and the history of Belgium before the class begins. Classroom lectures will be illustrated with slides, and supplemented by visits to museums and churches.
BUS 281E Business in Europe (Exact dates TBD)
The diversity of the European marketplace will be addressed with reference not only to the people of Europe but also to current societal developments (e.g. new countries joining the EU and the new structures of the information society). The impact of macro policy development at the level of the European Union will be addressed alongside the micro issues of marketing. Classroom discussion will be supplemented by “live case-study” visits to major multinational corporations.
